The children in her 35 student class were grouped for reading in- stntction, using a basal program well balanced around thematic coverage of content-area topics at the upper levels. This progmam had been in use for only turn years. In the early grades Veronica had been taught by means of a highly sequenced. phonemic segmentation approach. Her grade six teacher told me that Veronica attended well and worked persistently but was having trouble with her work. She couldn't pinpoint what was causing the problems.
