Responsible Alcohol Service: A Rose Between Two Thorny Situations It was just after 9:00 PM., at the end of a long Saturday shift, when Rose Wheaton, a server at Vic's Restaurant, noticed a group settling into one of her tables by the bar. Although she had been at Vic's less than a month-and had yet to receive all of her server training-she recognized four of them as some of the restaurant's best guests. There were six people in the group: two older couples that were Saturday- night regulars who she called by name, and a younger man and woman she did not know. "Hey, Rose!" one of the men called out. "Sure looks busy tonight." "Never too busy for you and your friends, Mr. Grove," Rose said, smiling as she reached their table. "How are you doing this evening?" "We're fine. Just waiting for a table." Mr. Grove reached over and put his arm around the young man beside him. "This here's my son, Tommy. He's been away at college, but he's finally going to graduate next weekend. And this is Gwen, his fiance. We're out for a kind of two-for-one celebration-graduation and engagement." "That's great," Rose said. "What can I get for you while you wait for table?" your "I think champagne is in order," Mr. Grove said. "And six glasses." Rose glanced up from her pad at Tommy and Gwen. She quickly remembered that she had been 22 years old when she graduated from college. And Tommy and Gwen looked young. Were they even able to drink legally? "I'll bring your champagne right out," she said. She moved around the table toward the younger couple. "Could I please see your driver's licenses?" she asked the couple. "You've got to be kidding," Tommy said. "We card everybody that looks really young." Tommy's face flushed deep crimson as he turned to Gwen. "Do you have yours?" "I left my purse at your parents' house," she said. "Along with my wallet," Tommy said, staring back at Rose. "What about a passport? I've got mine out in the car." Rose shook her head. "It's got to be a driver's license." "That's crazy. What if we didn't drive a car?" "Look, I don't make the -" "I swear, we're both 22. We're getting married, for Pete's sake. Trust us."
