(3 points) Use the P&ID and the process description for the PetroSkills Distillation simulation to complete this question. The information is provided with the homework assignment files on Canvas. For reference, recall that we discussed strategies to control a distillation column in Homework 1 using this example. In distillation, the temperature of a stage is considered to correlate directly with equilibria composition. Thus, temperature measurements can be used to measure composition. Consider the following control loops in the distillation column (identified here by there controller tag). Note that the Petroskills notation for PIC includes the measurement device, so no sensors or transmitters are shown in the diagram. TIC-100 LIC-110 LIC-120 PIC-120 Note that PIC-120 is a split loop, acting on two valves simultaneously. Treat this loop as two separate loops (with separate controllers PIC-120A working on PCV-102A and PIC-120B working on PCV-120B. TIC-108 Note that TIC-108 is part of a cascade control system, to be discussed later in this course. It is providing signal to FIC-121, which acts on FCV-121. For the purpose of this exercise, assume that TIC-108 acts directly on FCV-121. For the loops described above: a. Identify the manipulated and controlled variable b. State the sign and units of the process gain c. Should the control valve be fail-open or fail-closed? Respond if there is a clear choice for safe operation. Provide your reasoning.
