Preschool Virtual Observation Assignment Option 2
For this assignment you will watch 3 short videos, each one will focus on a different aspect of early childhood/preschool development, then make a connection to a theory, and finally, do a short reflection on the video experience. Make sure to use the template when submitting this assignment. Once you download the document, simply type directly into the text boxes, when finished save to your computer and then submit this entire document in the assignment area (you can edit the directions out of your own document when ready to submit).
Before you watch each video, read the questions and directions that follow the video. This will guide what you should be observing and watching for in each video. Take notes as you observe to help you answer the questions. Notice that each video is linked to a specific area of development & you will need to relate what you observed in the video to what you have learned in your readings and from the developmental checklist. Plan to watch each short video multiple times Use the Checklists from Preschool Observation Option 1 to help you look for specific developmental milestones, be specific in choosing your milestone. Make sure to complete all 6 steps After downloading this document you will type your responses directly into the text boxes. If you can't use the template then retype each step and the questions and answer them in the correct order as the template. Points may be deducted if the template is not used.
Step 1 Introductory Paragraph: Write an introductory paragraph where you describe in detail the process you will use to complete this observation. Do you plan to read the chapters first? Watch the videos first? How do you think you will use the text information to support what you observe?
Directions | Response |
Make sure your paragraph is original, thoughtful, and specific to your process for completing this assignment. |
Step 2: Observation 1 Language Skills
Focused Observation Chapter 7 Video 16 Redleaf Press Video
After watching this video, what did you learn about the language skills of this preschool aged child? Think about vocabulary, sentence length and structure, conversation skills, and listening skills. What did you find in Chapter 9 that relates to your observations? In what ways did the caregiver extend the child's language skills?
Question | Response |

In what ways did the caregiver extend the child's language skills? Be specific
What did you find in chapter 8that relates to this observation? What quote from the text supports your observation? Cite the quote. |

Question | Response |
What are some of the developmental benefits of play for young children?
How did the children use language? What cognitive concepts were enhanced? And finally, what social skills were practiced?
What did you find in chapters 9 and 10 that support this observation? What quote from the text supports your observation?Cite the quote |
Step 4: Observation 3 Physical Development
Observing Gross Motor Skills ECE Learning Hub Video (this is not the same video found in the module)
After watching this video, describe at least six gross motor skills that you observed and list the typical age that a child might master that skill. You will find the information to support this observation in Chapter 8 and on these checklists.
Task | Response |
Name at least 6 gross motor skills that you observed in this video and the typical age that a child might master that skill.
Carefully check your list and compare it to our textbook or the Gross motor skills checklist in option 1, make sure you did not list fine motor skills. List any additional Gross Motor skills you observed.
What did you find in chapter 7 or 8 that relates to this observation? What quote from the text supports your observation? Cite the quote |
Step 5: Analyze a Specific Milestone
Choose one specific milestone you observed a child meeting on one of the videos (in any area, on any of the 3 checklists from Preschool Observation Option 1) to look at more closely (for example, "Understands the idea of counting")
Question | Response |
What milestone did you choose? Be very specific.
Why is this milestone important? (What does it show us about the child's development? What does it now allow the child to do? What is coming next?)
What is something that could be a positive influence on how and when this milestone develops? (what would support this milestone)
What is something that could be a negative influence on how and when this milestone develops? (what could undermine this milestone?) |
Step 6: Make a connection to a Theory
Theories help guide us to understand children's growth and development. The key theories in Child Development were introduced in Chapter 1 and revisited in later chapters, where appropriate. Connect something you observed to a theory we have covered in class.
Question | Response |
What theory are you making a connection with? Make sure it is an actual theory.
Where is this theory discussed in the book? Provide the chapter and page number.
How does what you observed illustrate this theory? Be very specific |
Step 7: Reflection
Reflect on this experience by answering this question
How was this experience different than seeing children in person? (consider both benefits and drawbacks) |
Step 8: Summary Statement:
Describe the process/steps you actually used to complete the observation and template. Compare your actual experience to what you wrote in the introductory Statement. For example, maybe you thought you would just watch the videos and read the text, but you discovered that it was better to read the text first and then watch the videos.
