As an Operations manager for a successful bakery, Frederic's position comes with many responsibilities that contribute to the success of BonPain.

  1. 1. Strategic Frederic has to carefully manage his time throughout the day in order to meet all of his meeting obligations. As an operations manager he must creatively figure a game plan for his entire workday that involves many aspects of the business. As soon as he arrives to the plant he instinctively checks his email, because he knows that the information there will guide him on where he needs to focus his time.
  2. Design As an operations manager Frederic has to implement the design of new products and services, in order to stay up to date on new advances. During one of his many tours, Frederic discussed the need for a new packing robot, which would increase the productivity of the plant. Frederic takes the time to walk thought the plant with the Plant Engineer to discuss the design and layout of the new robotic line. It is then found out that the current packing area would need a new configuration, which would cause the whole packing area to be completely redesigned. Frederic took notice that with the new equipment accompanied by a new design could increase the productivity and eliminate many of their current issues.
  3. . Planning and control The success to planning and control in any organization is a crucial tool in determining the amount of output and profits. Frederic's main focus should be on this aspect of his business, to assure that every department runs smoothly. When he notices that there are issues to productivity he spends his time investigating the cause of the problem. If a department is lacking in their planning and control duty, this will lead to a chain of problems that affect many people. The production breakdown caused a late order to an important supermarket client, when this took the client in turn lost profits. In turn has there been a better control of the production line, the problem could have been avoided.
  4. 4. Improvement During the final stage of Frederic's tour he observed the various issues in the patisserie production plant, due to its issues on daily build up. He realized that the problem was due to the lack of drivers and trucks to deliver products to clients. He also took into consideration the advice from the Human Resource Manager concerning repetitive injury strain to overworked employees. Frederic decided to make it an important agenda on his list during the next meeting due to the urgency to improve the productivity in the patisserie department.

Others/Specify Fixing issues in the organization were very important issues that composed Frederic's workday, but staying current with emerging trends is also an important element to their success. During his afternoon he took time to meet with the Marketing Director concerning the potential growth in "snacking", he took into consideration the potential for market growth and decided to test the trend by conducting trials for the different recipe ideas.

The majority of Frederic's workday composed mainly of the most important aspects of the business, which should be his main focus. There were many issues concerning new equipment, production failures, client satisfaction that needed to quickly be addressed in order for the business to run smoothly. Frederic's day seems to have more complicated issues, than we would normally see with another profession. He is in charge of several aspects in his organization that all have to work together similar to an oiled machine in order for the business to thrive.

Frederic has the responsibility of finding new ways to help the organization become more proficient in their everyday productions. He takes into consideration the issues concerning time and the handling of customer's orders; in turn he decides to invest in a new robotic packaging line. The new robotic line would then eliminate the need for more workers; instead it would be able to conduct the work of five workers at a faster speed. Therefore in the long run save the organization money as well as raising its profits. As a manager Frederic not only has to think of the benefit of the organization, he also must take into consideration his employees. Frederic realizes that any decision he makes must be of mutual benefit. Q-5: In what ways Frederic's operations contribute to the competitive advantage of the company? Frederic's operations contributed to the competitive advantage of the company by looking at all aspects of the organization and implementing changes. When Frederic considered the robotic packaging, not only did he look at its benefits now he also looked at the payback it would provide for the future. This was an important aspect to consider, due to the fact that technology is always changing and he wanted to make sure that the packaging robot could provide quality in years to come. He also took his knowledge of current statistics and marketing forecast to predict the future outlook of the company, in order to set into place beneficial outcomes
