Problem 3 - Torsional Stress & Strain (35 pts) A machine component has the geometry below, and is used to transmit torque. Region AB is hollow with outside diameter DAB and inside diameter das, region BC is solid with diameter Dac, and region CD is solid with diameter DCD. If the shaft accepts the input torque T's at B, and has outputs TA at A, and To at D, determine the maximum shear stress in the assembly (without considering stress concentration) and the angular deflection of D relative to A, ODIA. All segments of the shaft are composed of 2014-T6 Aluminum. Take: DAB 110 mm, das = 90 mm, Dac = 80 mm, DCD = 60 mm, L = 3 m, L = La=2m, Ts = 15 kN-m, TD=Ts, and T = Ta. Extra Credit: Draw a properly oriented stress ele- ment showing the shear stress at point E on the outside edge of section BC. The top is the complete stress-strain response and the bottom is the elastic-near yield response. Identify each of the labeled points on the graph. Note that A' appears twice on purpose. Also determine the Elastic Modulus, and the Strain at Failure. Show your work where appropriate. 1. Elastic Modulus: Strain at Failure: 2. A: 3.
