Problem statement: South African coal resources are depleting owing to the long history of coal mining. The future of coal mining will be in the Waterberg coal field in Limpopo. The resources occur at a depth greater than 250m and the thickness of the coal is roughly 110m, but the top 50m comprises coal intercalated with shale and the bottom 60m contains five seams with sandstone and shale partings. You are then required to determine the quantity and quality of the coal deposit as well as salient features, either on surface or underground, which could influence the mining of this deposit.
