PROBLEM STATEMENT You work for a company that makes skewers for toasting marshmallows over campfires. The skewer is just a metal rod with a plastic handle on the end. The rod has a square cross-section 5 mm on a side, and the rod protrudes 60 cm from the plastic handle that insulates the end of the rod. The basis for the skewer design is that it should be possible for 10 cm of the rod to be held in the fire so that section of the rod reaches a uniform temperature of 600C, yet the other end of the rod will not melt the handle, which happens at 100C. Additionally, it is assumed that the remaining 50 cm of the rod is exposed to air at 20C with a convective heat transfer coefficient of 10 W/K-m2. Currently, the rods are made of stainless steel, which has a thermal conductivity of 22 W/m-K. Your manager suggests changing to cheaper aluminum for the rod, which has a thermal conductivity of 220 W/m-K. a) (18 pts) Calculate the temperature of the rod where it touches the handle, 50 cm from the 600C flame. Does it meet the design criterion - that is, will the plastic handle avoid melting? b) (2 pts) Will your customers be as safe using the aluminum rod as the current stainless steel rod? Explain briefly any differences in the heat transfer performance of the two rods that could affect safe use
