PROBLEM-The manufacturing facility where you work employs three data-entry operators who work full-time keyboarding production, personnel, and inventory data into a computer. This data is then sent via secure Internet connection to the headquarters minicomputer, where it becomes part of the corporate database for financial, production, and personnel Last year, one of the operators was absent from work for two weeks for a condition diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome, a neuromuscular disorder of the tendons and tissue in the wrists caused by repeated hand motions. Her symptoms included a dull ache in the wrist and excruciating pain in the shoulder and neck. Her doctor treated her with anti-inflammatory medicine and a cortisone injection, and she has had no further problems. However, just last week a second data-entry operator experienced similar symptoms; her doctor diagnosed her ailment as "repeated-motion illness," or repetitive stress injury (RSI). Because the company anticipates further automation in the future, with more data- entry operators to be hired, your boss has asked you to gather additional information on this condition. Once the extent of the problem is known, she wants you to make any appropriate recommendations regarding the work environment-posture, furniture, work habits, rest breaks, and the like-that will alleviate this problem.

The problem statement and subproblems for your report are

As its effecting all Data Entry Operators and their absence from work due to the above problem may hit businesses as well as delay in entering and formulating Data .

Solution : As a sensible company dedicated to welfare and care of employees a tested Industrial Engineering Technique called Motion Study and Ergonomics can be used to study repeated Motions and Sitting Postures to reduce repeated Motions and reduce stress on wrist and hands . For Example sitting in a position which may stress the Back bone , better Ergonomically Designed Chairs can be used after studying postures and also motions which create stress .

As there is no stress of eyes and eye related problem is not discussed hence we may ignore Visual Aids .

The Answer is motion study and Ergonomics .

Secondary Data Collection and Analysis :

Data can be collected from Various Research Papers and studies done on health issues faced by Data entry operators across the Globe . As the Above case discusses wrist and hand pain data related to repeated motion of hand and sitting postures can be Collated .

The Analysis can be done using analytical tools in Ergonomics ( Related to Doctors recommendation on sitting postures and various X Ray and Scanning reports ) and the solutions available in Motion and Timestudy for Example Standard Time Calculation of Giving Fatigue Allowance and Personal Allowance .
