Project 4 (Measures of Spread about the Mean) Research Questions: How do the distributions of the county level population change from 2010 to 2017 compare between counties that contain vs. do not contain a metropolitan area? (Note: Use the pop change variable. Do NOT use the pop2010 or pop2017 variables.) Introduction: Data set (county2017) for 3142 individual counties in the United States, collected from Census.gov. Variables: name: County names state: State names pop2000: Population in 2000 pop2010: Population in 2010. pop2017: Population in 2017 pop_change: Percent change in population from 2010 to 2017 poverty: Percent of the population in poverty in 2017 homeownership: Percent of pop that lives in their home or with the owner (2006-2010) multi unit: Percent of living units that are in multi-unit structures (2006-2010) unemployment rate: Unemployment rate as a percent in 2017 metro: Whether the county contains a metropolitan area median_edu-Median education level of residents (2013-2017) per captita income: Per person income (2013-2017) median_hh_income: Median household income (2013-2017) smoking ban: Describes whether there is a county-level smoking ban in place in 2010 Think It Through: 1) Use technology to create dotplots or histograms that show the population change distribution for both types of counties. Use the same scales and clear labels for easy visual comparison. 2) Use technology to find the mean and standard deviation for both distributions. 3) Develop a thesis statement that addresses the question(s). 4) Make observations about shape, center, spread and outliers (if there are any). Then write a sentence that compares population change for each of the observations you made previously about shape, center, and spread.
