Project Management - Closing a project

how does a project manager know when he/she is done. When his/her role is complete? How do you tell when a project is complete whether a failure, success or somewhere in-between? It can be very difficult to walk away and move on to the next project - the sense of ownership can be very strong. when is it time to hand it off to the team and move on?
