PROMPT: During the pre-final week we will continue to learn about the intricacies of strategic management in the nonprofit sector. Apart from improving the quality of life, a nonprofit organization is also a business unto itself; though the financial gains are not for private use. As such, the internal governance process, staffing, funding, bookkeeping, board development, and so on, demands skills in strategic management that we have acquired during the previous weeks. This is because the management of a nonprofit organization adds the challenges of working with the public and with volunteers, yet it operates similarly to any business. In the previous week you identified a problem and suggested that nonprofit organization can offer a solution. This week, your exercise goes one step further by focusing on the management of the nonprofit to fulfill its proposed mission.
A) INTRODUCTION: Pretend that you created a nonprofit organization based on your previous week's problem-versus-solution paradigm, and now you get down to work. Briefly introduce the major steps you will take: What programs are you creating? How will you operate the new nonprofit? How will you incorporate your organization and perform annual filings required by law? (Under this heading just offer a list; you will get into details under the headings listed below.)
B) EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT: State your strategy for finding your clients and funders. Explain how you plan to sell them the programs and services your nonprofit.
C) INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT: Define how the nonprofit will work in terms of programs and operations. C1: PROGRAMS: Define three programs you created, and demonstrate how each program is linked with the mission statement. Explain how each program will improve the quality of life. C2: OPERATIONS: Explain what basic skills and personalities you expect from the people you wish to have in your board of directors. State the conflict of interest policy and sketch the basic aspects of the budget. (We will return to the budget next week.) C3: LAW: Explain the steps you will take to incorporate the nonprofit organization. Name the documents you need on record and/or file with the state and the IRS, to obtain the nonprofit status. Once the nonprofit status is obtained from the state and IRS, list the annual documents you need to file annually with the state and with IRS.
D) CONCLUSION: Provide a brief conclusion.
