Advantages

1. Promotes a mutual stake in resolution. Solutions are more likely to be carried out by the parties.

3. Mediation helps the parties meet their underlying interests rather than fight over positions.
4. Mediation is usually cheaper than adjudication or arbitration.
5. Mediated parties are more satisfied with the process than are participants in adjudication or arbitration.

Limitations

1. Not all conflict parties can agree to work through their conflict with the "enemy." They may either not want to talk openly about their difficulties with the other or not want to be in the presence of the other person.
2. Mediation involves considerable commitment to working on the conflict. Many parties are not prepared to re-invest in a relationship that has been problematic for them; instead, they would rather try other routes to settlement or just continue the conflict.
3. When one person, usually the woman, has been abused physically or emotionally, she may not be able to speak up with enough authority in mediation to generate options, argue for her perspective, and avoid being manipulated.
