Q1) Saturated steam is flowing in a steel pipe with an outside diameter 0.273m. The temperature of the steam is 500K (heat of vaporization 1825kJ/kg ) and the steam value is $0.004/kg. It is desired to insulate the pipe with a material that has a thermal conductivity of 0.01W/m. K. The cost of the installed insulation per meter of pipe length is 200 times the thickness of the insulation in meters ( i.). Annual fixed charges including maintenance amount to 20% of the initial installed cost. The total length of the pipe is 500m and the average surrounding temperature is 300K. The air-film cocfficient at the outside of the insulation may be taken as 15W/m2K for all the insulation thickness. Heat resistances due to steam film, scale and pipe wall are negligible. The overall heat transfer coefficient becomes UAo=2kins(D0+2It)ln(DeDe+2It)+h01L(D0+2It) a) Estimate the annual fixed cost $/y year b) wall ont the missing data in the table c) Estimate the optimum insulation thickness, m, that minimizes the total annualized cost and the corresponding total annualized cost $/year(40pts)
