During the 20th century, the link between asbestos and certain cancers became clear. By the 1980s and the 1990s, the use of asbestos was restricted or banned in many countries. Yet many older buildings still contain asbestos. Asbestos has been found in a public school in the Bronx. Some argue that the asbestos must be removed immediately, for the safety of the students, regardless of the financial cost. Others argue that there is not enough money in the budget for immediate asbestos removal, and that asbestos is likely present in many other schools and buildings in New York City.
