Question 3pts

Continuing to play the part of Jenny, you are to show how you would interact with a co-worker in the workplace who is being difficult and not cooperating with both their and your work requirements. You will do this by participating in a role play. It is a 2-person role play.

To complete this task, it will help to first:

  • read the provided scenario
  • access and read the below supporting documents (available on the Banksia Care website):
    • DC SD1 Code of Ethics
    • SE8 Code of Conduct Policy and Procedure.
  • ask a colleague, friend or family member to play the part of the co-worker (it may be the same person who helped previously)
  • ask your volunteer to read the Meeting Participant Role Descriptions Handout Download Meeting Participant Role Descriptions Handout (to help them effectively play their role and character)
  • explain to your volunteer how the role play will run, and answer any questions they might have about the role they are playing
  • set up a suitable space in your location that matches the provided scenario.

The role should take approximately 3-5 minutes.

Note: when completing this task, you are to dress professionally, all attire must be appropriate for work in the health care sector. Clothing should not be revealing and your appearance must be in line with Banksia Care's Code of Conduct Policy and Procedure. Please wear closed-toed shoes and remove jewellery.

Scenario: Communication with Josh

You have been asked by your Coordinator, Frank, at Banksia Care to clean out the storeroom - it is starting to become a workplace hazard, and he wants it cleaned up before someone is hurt or something gets damaged.

Nothing has been sorted, and there is stuff all over the floor.

Frank tells you that Josh will help you clean up. He's just on a break at the moment and will be down to help you in about 5 minutes when his break ends. Frank wants you to have it done within 2 hours.

Josh hates doing these types of jobs. He'll do anything he can to do as little work as possible and is often argumentative and rude. Josh is an administrative officer.

You go to the storeroom and start cleaning up.

Josh finally arrives 20 minutes later, long past his break time. You ask him where he has been because you have been waiting for him to help you lift something that needs 2 people.

He immediately gets snappy with you, and you can tell he's got an attitude.

Start the role play (and your recording) with Josh arriving on the scene, and with you asking him to start helping you. Clearly explain what you want him to do (help you clean up, lift items, place items that you aren't sure should be disposed of in a corner, and take rubbish down to the compactor). Josh will interact with you, expect resistance and be prepared to negotiate with him to get everything done.

During the role play, your teacher will be looking to see that you can:

  • explain the timeframes of the job as given by Frank and negotiate with Josh to get the job done faster (you will need to think of ways in which you could work together to get the job done efficiently)
  • show respect at all times in your communication with Josh, regardless of how he speaks to you
  • use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication to get Josh to understand what you want
  • appreciate the constraints to communication involved in this situation and use effective communication skills to resolve the situation
  • recognise the non-verbal cues being shown by Josh and adjust your communication as necessary.

Your teacher will use this Observation Checklist Download Observation Checklistto evaluate your role play.
