Question 5 (Storage Device Operation and Performance) (a) A HDD of capacity 500 GB has following specifications: a rotation rate of 5000 RPM, 200 cylinders (numbered from 1 to 200), ability to move heads across n cylinders in a time of 1 + (n/20) ms, and a constant transfer rate of 100 MB/s on all tracks. i. Calculate the average time taken to read a 1 MB block from the hard disk assuming that for an average read, the head travels half the cylinders and half a revolution. ii. The HDD is configured with a single buffer to read 1 MB blocks from the hard disk and process the blocks. After reading a block from the hard disk as noted in part (i), the buffer needs 15 ms to process a single 1 MB block. Estimate the amount of time it takes to process 10 blocks, each of 1MB size. ii. To improve the performance of the buffered read noted in part (ii), the HDD has been configured with two buffers. Estimate the amount of time it takes to process 10 blocks, each of 1MB size. iv. Suppose the 101 MB blocks are contiguous on disk and therefore seek time and rotational delay are negligible, and the disk head is already on the correct cylinder. For the double-buffer scenario from part (iu), estimate the amount of time it takes to process 10 blocks, each of 1MB size. (10 marks]
