Intellectual developmental disorder refers to an individual’s significantly impaired cognitive functioning, and deficits in adaptive behaviors; for example, self-help, communication, or interpersonal skills. According to the DSM-5, onset of an intellectual developmental disorder occurs during the developmental period. Unfortunately, persons with this diagnosis can be charged later in life with various legal crimes. Imagine you are working for the court system and one of the defense attorneys has asked for a report regarding a client with an intellectual developmental disorder who is facing legal charges.
