You decide to grow red cabbage in your garden for her, and a friend suggests you try using capsaicin (the chemical that gives chilies their "kick") as a slug deterrent. As an intrepid soil biologist, your first question is how the soil microbes in your garden will break down the new chemical. You set out to describe a possible aerobic degradation pathway. The formula of capsaicin is pictured below. . 2 1. First, identify different functional groups in this molecule. Circle each functional group. and provide its name 2. Next, for each functional group, provide an extracellular enzyme that could be used to o separate it from the rest of the molecule. That is what enzyme could break the bonds to either side of the functional group? (Don't forget to include an enzyme for ring cleavage.) 3. Thinking of the factors that can restrict degradation, are any of the enzymes you listed in question 2 unable to attack the functional group bond in the molecule's current state? What reactions would need to occur first to allow the restricted reaction(s) to take place? 4. Finally, based on your answers to questions 1 - 3, describe a plausible step-by-step pathway for the aerobic degradation of capsaicin, listing the types of enzyme for each reaction step.
