QUESTION ONE [20] Japan proposes addition of 13 substances to its occupational disease list 20 October 2022 Chemical Watch Japan's health ministry has proposed an update to its occupational diseases list under the Labour Standards Act, which will see the addition of 13 substances that pose a risk to workers health. In two separate public consultation notices issued on 14 October, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) identified the following substances and diseases for addition to the list: Two health disorders would also be removed under the amendment - consciousness disorder for methyl iodide and vasomotor neuropathy disorders for the following substances: The MHLW also proposed to add severe heart failure to the list and replace dissecting aortic aneurysm with aortic dissection in Table 1-2 of the Labour Standards Act. Enforcement is expected to be in late December. The proposed update to Japans occupational diseases list follows a report published on 18 March in which the MHLW identified ten substances posing a risk to worker health. The report followed an evaluation exercise carried out on 216 substances that MHLW began in July 2019. Required: Discuss the concept of occupational hygiene from a risk management perspective.
