Ralph was a hotshot Hollywood movie mogul back before computer graphics revolutionized the industry. Ralph was a creative genius who excelled at coming up with innovative methods of producing movies that were technologically advanced but still profitable. He became a recognized master of the craft and founded and built his own successful production company. Ralph was a celebrity who lived like a rockstar, spending money almost as fast as he made it. Then the computers came and transformed the movie industry almost overnight. Ralph and his company were no longer in demand, and his business fell off suddenly and sharply. Soon Ralph found himself in dire straits, personally broke and the owner of a company that owed large amounts to various creditors but was about to run out of money. Late one evening Ralph boarded a flight to Africa without telling anyone and disappeared into the sub-Saharan jungle. From his comfortable hideout, Ralph contacted his old friend Sammy, who ran a small Southern California trucking business and was known for taking the occasional shady job. Ralph negotiated an agreement with Sammy whereby Sammy would drive his truck to Ralph's company offices late at night, enter with security codes supplied by Ralph, and remove a number of rare and very valuable pieces of art that would then be sold on the black market for a substantial amount of cash. Once the cash was in hand, Sammy and Ralph would split it 50/50. Sammy did as he was told right up to the point where he was supposed to split the cash with Ralph. Instead, Sammy kept it all and mocked Ralph for trusting him. Ralph wants to sue Sammy in a US court for breach of contract to recover his share of the money. Ralph acknowledges that at least some of what Sammy did may have been arguably illegal, but contends that it either wasn't illegal or doesn't matter because Ralph owned the company and was just hiring Sammy to collect, transport and sell property that was Ralph's anyway. Of course, the deal between Ralph and Sammy was never reduced to writing, which Ralph explains by noting that he was out of the country on vacation and could not be present to write or sign anything.
