Read the following case study.

Taylor is an English literature major, but is taking some math and science courses as general education requirements. They typically do very well on all their assignments for English composition, psychology, sociology, and other liberal arts classes, and don't feel that they normally need to put in too much extra effort to earn high grades.

However, they are having some trouble with their accounting and chemistry classes. They have scored Bs and Cs on recent assignments and are starting to feel discouraged. Taylor is also finding that they don't have time to spend with friends and family anymore because they are studying so hard, and they are not sleeping well or exercising regularly like they used to.

It is the fourth week of a 15-week semester, and they are considering withdrawing from these classes. Based on what you learned in this module, what do you think Taylor may be dealing with internally? What can they do to achieve a more optimistic outlook and greater success?

There are two components to this small-group discussion:

• First, on your own, identify what kind of mindset Taylor is experiencing.
• Next, with your group, develop a plan to support Taylor. What can they do? Make some suggestions for how the student can adjust their thinking, and suggest some steps they can take to overcome these struggles.
