Mary is a 57-year-old Caucasian female who works as a hairdresser. She has been divorced for over 20 years and lives with her adult son, Paul, who is 36. She never remarried after leaving her husband who was abusive to both Mary and Paul. Mary does not earn enough money to live on her own but contributes half of the expenses to the household. Mary does not have many friends or social activities. Her favorite activity is to go to the horse racing track and bet on the horses. Paul enjoys this as well so they go to the track together. They bring a lunch and water and sit at the rail where they can see the horses come racing by clearly. Mary bets on multiple races, winning at least as often than she loses, as she studies the racing forms at home and watches races on TV to determine what horses are worth backing. Horse racing is her sole social activity that she shares with her son.
