Recovering from Surgery: A new post surgical treatment was compared with a standard treatment. Seven subjects received the new treatment, while seven others (the controls) received the standard treatment. The recovery times, in days are given below. Treatment 12 13 15 19 20 21 24 Control 18 23 24 30 32 35 39 Question: Using the above data, can we conclude that the mean recovery time for those receiving the new treatment is less than the mean for those receiving the standard treatment? Use the 5% significance level. Let: #1 = mean recovery time for the treatment group and /2 = mean recovery time for the control group. Perform the hypothesis test using the 5 step process. Make sure you have the 5 essential elements. a) Let Ho: M1 = #2. State H1 in symbols only. Identify which hypothesis is the claim and determine the type of test (right-tail, left-tail, two tail). b) Determine the critical value and label it -- for example, z = 1.96 ort = -2.421, etc). c) Compute the test value. If you are using the p-value method, then include the p-value of the test. d) Make the decision to Reject Ho or Do not reject Ho. e) State your complete conclusion in the context of the claim
