- Each one of us has our own set of personal values. Personal values can be defined as the ideals that guide or qualify personal conduct and interaction with others and with the workplace. Our values influence our conduct helping us to determine right from wrong, they influence who we are. Our sets of values can be categorised into a number of areas. Seneca College (2006) suggests that there are 4 areas into which our values can be categorised:

  • Personal
  • Social
  • Cultural
  • Work

- Newman and Pollnitz (2005) also define different levels and types of values. They cite the work of Shaver and Strong (1982) who suggest that there are different types of values - moral and non-moral values. Moral values are those that address harms and benefits. They fall on a continuous scale from basic moral values to personal moral values.

Basic moral values are those that are essential to sustain life such as valuing the sanctity of life

Personal moral values are those which are used to make daily life decisions. They help to guide behavior and include such things as valuing honesty or valuing human life.

Non-moral values can be classified into:

    1. Aesthetic values - the standards by which we judge beauty (as it relates to nature, music, art, literature, personal appearance etc)
    2. Performance values - whether a person or thing performs adequately ( hard work).

This assessment must cover:

- Contribution incorporates understandings of the place of values in an ethical dilemma, and comments demonstrate the ability to critique other's positions and make a unique contribution.

- Contributions reflect strong analysis of ethical principles from diverse positions within the scenario. The analysis of ethical theory applying to diverse perspectives is evident.

-Analysis of appropriate theories /ethical approaches is evident. A range of conceptual tools trialled in decision making. Decision making synthesises the effects of personal and professional values.

innovative analysis of discussion content to highlight the ethical nature of teaching and own ethical growth and learning. Analysis show how their contributions have facilitated others learning.
