Jordan White:

Motivation is defined by (Marriam, Motivation definition & meaning) a motivating force, stimulus, or influence: incentive, or drive. Examples are, in order to gain knowledge, you research a subject. In order to feel healthier, you work out. The driving force behind maintaining a commitment to your goals.

Maslow's theory is made up of physiological needs, security needs, social needs, self-esteem needs, and self-actualization needs (Miller, More, Braswell, 2020). These needs help a supervisor to understand the needs of different employees. An understanding of how each need is required and fulfilled in different individuals will be a tool for supervisors.

The physiology and security needs are what motivate me. The needs for security and safety become primary (Cherry, 2022). The need to have a stable income and benefits. The need to work in an environment that has job security. The need to build a healthy retirement and be able to take time off. To buy food and have shelter.

Motivation is "a motivating force, stimulus, or influence:INCENTIVE,DRIVE" (Merriam-Webster, n.d). "Maslow proposed that motivation is the result of a person's attempt at fulfilling five basic needs: physiological, security, social, esteem, and self-actualization" (Miller et al, 2021). I think that Maslow's theory does provide a supervisor with the tools needed to deal with employees. It covers different types of employee and explains to us what could be needed when it comes to those employees. What motivates me on the job is self-actualization. I am someone who loves to learn new things everyday and I am open to learning even if it is something from my subordinates. "This is the stage of self-actualization, which is characterized by the need to develop feelings of growth and maturity, become increasingly competent, and gain a mastery over situations" (Miller et al, 2021). Being a master of my craft is extremely important to me. I hate telling people "I don't know" and this is enough to motivate me to learn more about my job and maybe even more. "As it turns out, saying "I don't know" can seriously hurt your credibility and make you seem incompetent" (Martin, 2014). I would hate for people to think I am incompetent when it comes to my craft.

Is it just me or do you hate saying "I don't know" too?
