My thoughts on animal consciousness are that they are very aware of their surroundings and actions. For example, dogs are trained to use the bathroom outside instead of in the house. If they do and are punished for such action, they begin to learn causing them to understand which is acceptable and not. The meaning of consciousness I am using in this example is the state of realizing and understanding something, like being aware of an external object or surrounding. There are certain ways to measure animal consciousness such as perception, self-awareness, attention, memory, and metacognition. A great example of an animal with higher cognitive functions are dolphins. These animals can problem solve and learn certain gestures to communicate. This is a good example of understanding that some animals do share similar cognitive functions. I find it ethical to a certain extent of learning animals using updated technology, however I find it better to do so in their environment. Taking them out their environment is not ethical in my opinion.
