Sam Paul is 32 year old Security Officer at a World Class Gaming Environment. Sam works 4 shifts @ 10 hours and works a 3 shift rotation. One month per shift. ( 1 month days, 1 month afternoon and 1 month evenings) Sam has been working for over six (6) years and has always been someone who uses a fair amount of sick days/personal days. However for the last 2 + years Sams attendance has been out of control and very excessive. 90% of Sams absences have been covered by some type of documentation. Not all documentation has been accepted. (doctors office parking receipts, daycare notes, doctors note, garage receipts, dental notes etc.)

Sam had 15 absences in 2021, 40 in 2022 for a variety of reasons and due to the fact that not all absences had supporting documentation he received a 3days suspension (through progressive discipline). Finally 2023 Sam has had 20 absences as of March 1, 2023.

As the HR manager, how would you and the disability specialist answer the following:

1. Wht do you think the management team should do since the majority of the absences could be considered medical.

2. How would management manage the excessive absences? What process would you put in place?

3. Describe how you would approach the problem and how you would discuss it with Sam?
