Scenario

A patron who has been drinking for a few hours approaches the bar to order another drink. You have been monitoring this patron and notice they are stumbling when they walk and are slurring their words.

You have a reasonable belief that they have had too much to drink.

The role-play requires the learner to speak to the Assessor as if they were the patron.

Consider some of the following when speaking to your Assessor as if they were the patron during the role-play.

What NOT to do:

• Don't forget to assess the person's condition, and communicate appropriately
• Don't forget your responsibilities involving the wellbeing of others at your workplace
• Don't approach every refusal of service the same way; some situations require a very different approach than others
• Don't forget to give a reason for your decision

What to DO:

• Do consider the nature of the situation before deciding on your approach
• Do ensure your communication technique is appropriate for the situation
• Do assess more than just signs of intoxication
• Do remember you have a duty of care
