Section 33 of the Charter is also known as the Notwithstanding Clause. The Charter is intended to guarantee and protect the basic rights and freedoms of all Canadians and includes broad equality rights as well as fundamental freedoms, democratic rights, mobility rights, legal rights and language rights.
