For this discussion, I've chosen the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as my assessment tool.

The DSM traces its origins back to 1918 when the Bureau of the Census and American Medico-Psychological Association (now the American Psychiatric Association) "first attempted the creation of a formal, standardized nomenclature of psychopathological conditions. These efforts culminated in the publication of the'Statistical Manual for the Use of Institutions for the Insane'" (Kawa & Giordano, 2012). Since then, the DSM has evolved into the definitive resource for mental health practitioners.
