QUESTION 4: 15 marks A solid having a surface area of 55 m2 is air dried with an air velocity of 45 m/min under constant drying conditions. It weighed 1000 kg when bone dry. The initial moisture content is 0.15 kg water/kg dry mass and the initial drying rate is constant at 18 g/m2.min. The critical moisture content is 0.125 kg water/kg dry mass. Assume that the falling rate is linear with moisture content. a) Determine the time needed to dry the sond to 0.025 kg water/g solid. (7 mark) b) If the air velocity is increased to 240 m/min and the drying rate is proportional to the air velocity to the power 0.8, calculate the drying time. (8 mark)
