Singing Out Loud $($SOL$)$ produces custom outdoor speakers on a two$-$stage production line. The first stage makes a $$box$$ and the second stage does the custom assembly. The box stage consists of $14$ parallel stations, each staffed by an operator; the custom assembly stage consists of $16$ parallel stations, each also staffed by a single operator. Because all boxes are identical, the time to build one is almost constant, at $12$ minutes, whereas because there are many different speakers assembled from the standard box, the time for an operator to assemble a product is highly variable, with a mean of $15$ minutes. Unfortunately, SOL does not have any data on the standard deviation.
