SPSS in Focus
The TWO-Way Between-Subjects ANOVA
A hyopthetical study investigated the extent to which heterosexual men and women are willing to forgive an opposite-sex partner for transgressions in a relationship. men and women participants completed a questionnaire where they read five different situations where an opposite-sex partner trangressed in a relationship. After each situation, participants rated their willingness to forgive on a scale from 1 (not to forgive at all) to 9 (definitely forgive). hence, total ratings could range from 5( all 1s recorded) to 45( all 9s recorded). Given the following data, test whether forgiveness varies by sex and/or relationship status at a .05 level of significance.
Sex | Short term relationship | long term relationship |
men | 18 | 8 |
men | 24 | 22 |
men | 12 | 20 |
men | 9 | 11 |

Based on the value of the test statistics, what is the decision for each factor in the two-way between-subjects ANOVA? (circle one)
Factor A: Retain the null hypothesis Reject the null hypothesis
Factor B: Retain the null hypothesis Reject the null hypothesis
A B interaction: Retain the null hypothesis Reject the null hypothesis
Based on the F table you just completed, state the following values:
Total sample size
Sample size per cell
Number of levels for Factor A (p)
Number of levels for Factor B (q)
Significance for each test:
Factor A
Factor B
A B interaction
If you find a significant interaction, output a plot and interpret the nature of the interaction.
State the conclusion for this test in APA format. Make sure you summarize the test statistic, each significant main effect, and significant interaction. Provide an interpretation for the statistics you report.
