Stacey had been in a spectacularly successful private practice as a BCBA for over 3 years. She kept very complete data on her clients' behavior and her insurance billings in a locked file cabinet. Stacey had overworked for those 3 years, oftentimes putting in as many as 40-45 hours of client contact/week. She had amassed enough financial resources to take a 3-month vacation to Italy and live in a friend's Italian villa 2 of those 3 months. However, if she had to pay office rent and rent a place to live in Italy for 1 month, her budget would not stretch that far. Fortunately, Stacey's friend, Kathy, had just been certified as a BCBA and agreed to pay Stacey's rent so she could begin her own practice.Stacey wrote a letter to her clients, telling them she would be gone for three months and that she would contact them when she returned. She gave Kathy her office keys, forgetting that the key ring also had on it the key to the filing cabinet containing her client records. Stacey called Kathy from the airport to ask her to please not to open the file cabinet unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. Kathy used the front part of the file cabinet for her own records but did not look at any of Stacey's files. On several occasions Kathy forgot to lock her file cabinet and one morning she came in and there were papers piled neatly on the desk. She immediately contacted the housekeeping office and asked what had happened. Apparently, in the course of vacuuming the office the housecleaning staff had backed into the file cabinet and because the top drawer was halfway open, it swung entirely open, and the entire unit fell over, spilling its contents. The staff picked up all the papers and placed them neatly on the desk where Kathy found them the next morning.
