Step-by-step procedure to know the quantities
6. A 200L stirred fermenter contains a batch culture of Bacillus Subtilis at 28C. Air at 20C is pumped into the vessel at a rate of 1vvm (volume of gas per volume of liquid per minute). The pressure in the fermenter is 1atm. The gas flow rate measured at the outlet of the fermenter is 189L/min. The solubility of oxygen in the fermentation broth at 28C and 1atm air pressure is 7.88103kg/m3. a) Calculate the oxygen transfer rate with respect to the outgas concentration (Assume values from 18% to 20.1% o2, take a step size of 0.1% ). Note: Make a graph relating the oxygen transfer rate and the oxygen outlet partial pressure. b) If dissolved oxygen concentration in the broth is measured using an oxygen electrode and is 50% of that of air saturation, for each oxygen transfer rate determine the value of kLa of the system (create a table and a figure relating these two quantities). c) The oxygen analyzer used to measure the flue gas composition has been calibrated incorrectly. If the oxygen content has been overestimated by 10%, what is the error made in the kla value? Note: take the value of kla when the oxygen outlet concentration is 20.1% for comparison?
