Topic: The Cultural, Cognitive and Social Effects of Reading Books

General Purpose: To inform

Specific Purpose: The audience can see the benefits of reading books to gain knowledge and changing their own perspective in life.

Central Idea: Reading is one of four basic literacy life skills we use in our daily life and provides many benefits that come with it. There are plenty of reasons why reading is a beneficial practice such as expanding the mind, allowing creative thinking, gives you a greater perspective, feeling empathic, and may change your life. Reading different genre books such as philosophy, personal growth, and fiction allows us to open our eyes to different worlds, expand the mind, and help us grow as a person.

Main ideas:

  1. Reading can open our eyes to different worlds
  2. Reading expands the mind
  3. Reading can help you grow as a person

Introduction: As college students, we typically have to read textbooks, essays, or articles to study for a test in class. While reading is a life skill that we use in our daily life. There are plenty of reasons why reading is a beneficial practice such as expanding the mind, allowing creative thinking, gives you a greater perspective, feeling empathic, and may change your life. Some may hate reading because it's tedious and boring, while some find reading to be pleasurable and enjoyable. Personally, I have enjoyed reading since last year during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and it became my new hobby. I'm informing you of the benefits of reading a book and you'll be amazed to see the places where reading can take you.

Thesis Statement: Reading different genre books such as philosophy, personal growth, and fiction allows us to open our eyes to a different world, expand the mind, and help us grow as a person.

Main Point I: Fiction allows us to open our eyes to a different world

  1. The first benefit is reading fiction novels because. A quote by Neil Gaiman claims that fiction builds empathy. He said, "Fiction builds empathy...by using your imagination, creating a world, and people and looking out through other eyes. You're being someone else, and when you return to your own world, you're going to be slightly changed". Viewing a world from a different perspective can help open our eyes to new ideas. It allows us to imagine ourselves walking in someone else's shoes and helps establish a similar connection that we can empathize with in real life.
  2. For example, the book The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is a great fiction novel about an African-American teenager who experiences prejudice, racism, and police brutality, which mirrors the world we live in. These social issues are seen commonly throughout history and we can empathize and understand their struggles from a fictional character perspective.

Main Point II: Another benefit is that Reading can expand the mind

  1. Research is done by Christy Whitten, Sandra Labby, Sam Sullivan published in 2019 on the impact of pleasure reading on academic success. The study concluded that students who chose to read for pleasure performed better in English, mathematics, science, and history. Students who engage in pleasure reading experienced a marginal average increase of .11% in English, 1.71% in science, 4.43% in mathematics, and 2.05% in history. The authors found that reading for pleasure would experience greater academic success than their non-reading peers.
  2. Reading books can expand our minds to be knowledgeable and give us more ideas. When reading we are developing our imagination and being curious about a book on what will happen at the end of the book.

Main Point III: The last benefit of Reading self-help or personal growth can help you grow as a person

  1. Reading about people's success stories and the struggles they went through to get to that position will inspire and help you grow your own personal life.
  2. One example is the book How To Be An Adult by David Richo which is an amazing book about personal growth. Being an Adult is not easy. Reading about others who also went through a hard time and managed to face their challenges can serve as a real inspiration. Reading can influence our lives to be better people. We are not alone and many other people are also facing some struggles in their lives.

Conclusion: Lastly, Find a book that catches your interest because if you think that you hate reading books, then perhaps you have yet to find the genre for your own personal reading. Reading books refreshes your mind and makes you feel optimistic about everything happening around you. You can pick up a book anywhere and anytime you want to read. Give yourself a chance to read a book, a chance to change your perspective on life, and a chance to build knowledge.
