Task 1: Brainstorm According to dumpsters.com; every year, U.S. landfills are filled with an estimated 139.6 million tons of waste including an estimated: - 30.63 million tons of food. - 26.82 million tons of plastic. - 18.35 million tons of paper and paperboard. - 13.8 million tons of metals. - 12.14 million tons of wood. - 11.15 million tons of textile. - 8.65 million tons of yard trimmings. - 6.87 million tons of glass. - 4.95 million tons of rubber \& leather. - 3.25 million tons of misc. inorganic waste. - 2.98 million tons of other assorted materials. Figure 1 is the waste pyramid. The top level, avoid and reduce waste, is the most preferable, while dispose of waste (landfill) is the least desirable. Figure 1. Waste pyramid. As a team, brainstorm ways to move common items up the pyramid (ie: ways to recover energy, ways to reuse items, ways to make items recyclable, etc...). You may choose to focus on a specific kind of consumer product, or you may brainstorm ideas more generally. Your goal is to come up with a long list of possible ideas, and to then filter down to your three "best" ideas. Your homework submission should include both your complete list of ideas and your list of the top three ideas, including explanations for why those three ideas were selected. Steps to brainstorming. - Everyone take a few minutes to think of, and write down, your own ideas. - Pick a person to record an overall list of ideas for your team. - Go around the group, sharing one idea at a time (remember, no rejected ideas yet) - Continue until no one has any ideas left - Review all your ideas. See if they spark any new, related ideas to add to the list. - Select three ideas to be your team's top three. They will be used for Task 2 below. Task 2: Decision matrix Create a decision matrix (Table 1) using the following criteria to pick a final idea from Task 1 to potentially pursue. Assign weights (with the sum of their value being 10) based on the importance of each criterion according to your team. Score how well each option addresses your criteria, then calculate the weighted total for each idea and circle the highest score. A morphological chart (see Table 2) is used to help brainstorm ideas for how the various functions of a product could be achieved. In the chart, either draw or write-out three ideas for how to accomplish each of the functions listed. Note, the product in question has intentionally not been called a "stroller" to allow for alternative interpretations to arise. Focus on the functions themselves, not preconceived ideas of what a stroller should look like. Iabie L. NIorpnological cnart Submission instructions - Turn in a single pdf document with Task 1 (list of ideas and top 3 picks identified), Task 2 (decision matrix and which option to pursue) and Task 3 (morphological chart) clearly marked. At the top of the page include the names of the team members who worked together on this assignment. - If you have been assigned to a formal team, title the file W2D2_HW_team number, where "team number" is the number assigned by your instructor. If you do not have a formal team, title the file W2D2_HW_UCusername, where "UCusername" is the username of the person from your group who is submitting the file
