Task 1: Performance Challenges of Open Pit Dump Trucks; Papers review (20 marks) Haulage systems in mining must be designed to be as efficient as possible to minimise costs, improve profitability, and increase the value of the project. Work on dump trucks improvement is more and more labour consuming and science intensive. Such work is mainly connected with necessary more exact system consideration of many factors determined by combination of dump trucks with excavators in a chain of technological processes, parameters of open-pit mines and climate. In addition, truck haulage is responsible for significant amounts of energy used in surface mining operations. Soofastaei et al. (2018) discuss in their work the energy-efficient operation of haul trucks in mines. Furthermore, Kuznetsov and Kosolapov (2019) investigated the dynamics of performance of open pit dump trucks in mine sites with severe climatic conditions. Their objective was to determine relationships between the main factors that affect the productivity of mine haul trucks during mining operations in diverse environments. You are required to read and analyse these two publications and address the following issues: 1. What are the main operating performance challenges for open pit haul trucks in any climate conditions? (Tip: think of what could decrease the performance of a haul truck) (6 marks) 2. Once you determine all challenges, you are asked to classify them in major categories. Please briefly explain the classification system you apply. (4 marks) 3. Which challenges you think have the biggest impact on the performance of haul trucks? (Tip: consider all conditions, get help from all findings in the papers) (5 marks) 4. How would you address the challenges with the higher impact? Explain briefly. (5 marks) In addition to the two papers (available to download from the assessment folder), you may refer to any source from the up-to-date existing literature (either the sources provided in the lecture material or other). MMS is a process whereby the mining method attributes are matched to the orebody characteristics. Several linguistic and numerical approaches have been presented in the past regarding the selection process of surface and underground mining methods for all kinds of deposits. You are required to conduct a brief Literature Review discussing the most common mining method selection schemes up to date. You are encouraged to start your literature search from the sources below and then access (through the library) other relevant and up-to-date literature. 1. Hartman, H. L. & Mutmansky, J. M. (2002). Please restrict yourself to a very concise, meaningful, and relevant discussion. If necessary, support your review with appropriate figures. Ensure proper citation and referencing (using APA7th referencing style) of the literature. The literature review (Task 2) marking will be based on the following rubric: Criterion Perfect 80% - 100% Very Good 65% - 80% Good 50% - 65% Unsatisfactory 0% - 50% Compared enough of most relevant and latest literature on findings to the research problem, critically evaluate them to justify the need of innovation Comprehensive critical review and analysis of findings to identify deficiencies and knowledge gaps; quality as in a journal article A commendable and sufficient comparison of findings to establish the space for innovation; Can improve in the critical comparison and analysis A satisfactory comparison of findings; yet not capturing some recent or important methods. Improvement is needed in critical comparisons and analysis Failed to critically review and present the state of the art of the technology. Clearly below the acceptable level of a formal technical report
