Teams are formed to work together towards a common goal. Traditionally, they are in the same place, but virtual teams can be located anywhere with an internet connection. Virtual teams can include members with different expertise and various levels of experience. Challenges of working from different time zones and team members being able to trust other people that they are working with who may never meet in person (Szewc, 2013). All communication is completed electronically. Trust is a major factor in the success of a team, along with openness of communication, fast feedback, and honest and clear communication. Teams are shown to need leadership, team building, and company support to be successful (Szewc, 2013). A team charter is a written document that lays out rules and expectations for the team that includes availability, roles, and responsibility. This information is key as it is clear communication for the team to know what is expected of them and others (Johnson, et al, 2022). Effective collaboration with diverse others requires a thorough understanding of culture; this understanding must encompass not only national culture, but also organizational and disciplinary culture as well (Flammia, 2016). Understanding the culture norms of the other team members will help avoid communications issues. The advantage of having a diverse team is the unique way of thinking and viewpoints possessed by the team members. Conflict resolution can be handled by avoidance, accommodation, competition, collaboration, and compromise (Montoya-Weiss, et al., 2001). Out of those options, avoidance is the least favored way to resolve conflict, because it could lead to continued poor team behavior, but the other options can lead to a much more positive result.
