The article "Managers and leaders, Are They Different?" by Abraham Zaleznik. The article points out the key differences between a manager and a leader. Managers uses their power to control the groups to achieve desired results where leaders often use the power to influence the thoughts and actions of other people. They both have different personalities as well. A manager uses all of his or her resources to solve the problems of an organization and become a problem solver, where a leader uses a practical approach to full fill his or her tasks. They both are different in their thinking and actions as well.

Managers goals arise from necessities. They try to create what market demands rather than putting their own ideas in it. Leaders are active thinkers who adopt a personal and active attitude toward goals. Managers tactics appears to be flexible. They offer both negotiation and bargain, rewards and punishments to achieve their goals. Leaders on the other hand have different approach to the problems. They like to excite the people with fresh approaches and new options to long-standing problems. Manager communicate to his subordinates indirectly and try to get more time thinking as time passes, a compromise will emerge.

One of the way an organization can develop leaders is through peer training. It occurs in various forms. It can be through task force made up of peers from several groups, joint responsibility of two peers responsible for different area of the business and through creating or encouraging a competition and rivalry among the peers.

I agree with the author that leaders and managers are different. As we all know leaders have a talent to make people listen to them and follow them, where managers use their power to get things done. It is a great article to read because it gives you a clear picture of how a leader is differ from a manager and how a leader is created in an organization. After finishing the article, I realized that every leader can be a manager, but every manager cannot be a leader.
