The portfolio will be assessed based upon the rubric below. In additionto the brief summary of the article, be sure to reference how the current event relates toCompensation and Benefits (cite material from the textbook/course materialsbe specific). Include APA citation for each article.
The following are key points to consider:
Please select five (5) research articles from scholarly academic journals that report on research in the field relevant to Compensation and Benefits (suggested topics are on page 2). From these, prepare an annotated bibliography to include a one-half page single-spaced summary of the article. Your summary should strictly report on what was done and what was found for each article. Next, address how this current event relates to course material. Within discussing how, cite the concept(s) directly from the course contenti.e., textbook page, chapter/section, and/or PPT slide. Be sure the format of your portfolio is professional and presentable.
Possible topics for finding relevant research articles: (Articles can be from multiple topics, or you can find multiple articles related to one topic.) 1. Compensation in start-up companies - how do you reward employees in a start-up company when cash is very scarce? 2. 401(k) Plans - making mutual fund investments 3. Retirement plans 4. Stock options for broad-based employees - do they motivate? 5. International benefits - benefits in other countries provided to local employees 6. Pay for Expatriates - pay and benefits for US expatriate employees 7. Non-monetary rewards - non-monetary ways to reward employees (merchandise, tickets to sporting events, etc.) 8. Vacation and leaves - paid and unpaid time off including employee sabbaticals 9. Sales compensation - pay for sales employees including its administration 10. Public recognition awards - are they useful and motivational? 11. Special employee services - credit unions, education for children, concierge service, etc. 12. Pay for contingent employees - pay and benefits for part-time, temps and contractees 13. Profit sharing in other countries 14. Outsourcing employee benefits services - is it more effective? 15. Programs to pay for drugs for senior citizens 16. Employee Benefits in New Economy firms - cutting edge benefits given to employees in Internet companies and other firms that employ scarce and talented people 17. Executive compensation - Is CEO pay too high? Are CEO's paid what they're worth? 18. Gender differences in pay 19. Union v. nonunion pay differences 20. Effect of minimum wage laws - on market wages and employment 21. Incentive pay systems - which work best? 22. Wellness plans - do they work? 23. How to contain healthcare costs Here is a partial listing of journals that would be appropriate if used as a source of articles: Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review (note: not really a research journal, but often synthesizes research articles and draws propositions), Journal of Applied Psychology, Compensation and Benefits Review, Labor Studies Journal, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Industrial Relations, Journal of Management, Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Management Studies, Human Relations, American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Journal of Labor Research, American Economic Review, Journal of Vocational Behavior. This is only a partial list; there are many good others. Although publications such as Harvard Business Review, Forbes, and Industry Week are good journals, they are not always academic in nature and should be carefully reviewed.
