The figure shows a turbine-driven pump that provides water, at high pressure, to a tank located 25-m higher than the pump. Steady-state operating data for the turbine and the pump are labelled on the figure. The stray heat transfer from the turbine and the pump is negligible. The pipe connecting the pump and the tank Steam P4 = 30 bar T = 400C (3) P2 =25 bar T = 100C W cv Pump Turbine P4 5 bar 4 T = 180C 25 m (2) Tank 1 Saturated liquid water P1 = 1 bar m = 20 kg/s is also insulated to prevent heat loss from the water to the surroundings. The kinetic energy effects at all numbered states (stations) can be ignored. Finally, the potential energy effects for the turbine can also be ignored. Determine the following: a) The phase of water at state 2 and state 4 and indicate the four states on a T - v diagram. b) The power required by the pump, in kW, to supply water to the inlet of the tank. c) The mass flow rate of steam, in kg/s, that flows through the turbine. The acceleration due to gravity can be assumed to be 9.81 m/s.
