The following information was obtained from a press shop in Bored Motor Company which works for three shifts of 8 hours each. In each shift, the workers are provided with a tea break of 15 mins before and after lunch apart from a lunch break of 30 mins A typical analysis of average unplanned downtime per shift revealed that at least two breakdowns are happening which accounted for a total lost time of about 55 mins and at least one setup was carried out which consumed at least 25 mins. In addition to this, minor breakdowns like tool sharpening, waiting for material etc. constituted around 5 mins. Each component was produced at a rate of 8 sec, and on an average, each shift was producing about 1821 parts. Out of these 1821 parts, around 15 parts are scrapped, and 35 were sent for rework.
