The following is an extract of the problem statement from a student proposal, titled
Assessing lack of effectiveness of internal control systems on asset management at the ministry of work, Namibia
Asset management is one of the most important functions at any company or institution. The
assets owned by the organization are the core resources of the organization and need to be well controlled. These include both moveable and immoveable property, inventory, equipment, cash and intangible assets. Effective internal control can help an organization to improve its performance, profitability and prevents loss of resources. It ensures reliable financial reporting as well as company compliance with laws and regulations, thereby avoiding damage to the companys reputation and other consequences. To sum up, it can help an organization prosper in order to achieve its objectives and also avoid pitfalls and surprises along the way (Jackson & Stent, 2016).
Despite the internal controls on asset management that exist, organizations are still facing problems regarding those internal controls, and this may be because the internal controls that are in the organization are weak, or are undermined by the workers, or not well designed (Jack, Robert & Joseph, 2007). Therefore, the researcher would like to analyses and evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls on asset management in Ministry of works, find out the positive contribution of internal control toward the reduction of asset theft, damage and misuse of properties, find out the types of internal controls ministry of works is using, we particular reference to whether and how they are using such internal controls to manage assets and find out proper improvement to ineffective internal controls on asset management.
