The Fundamentals of Rhetoric and Persuasion: Essay Analysis Have you ever read a news story, book, or social media post and thought, "I'd have never believed this claim, but this writer is convincing!" If so, this is the assignment for you. In this class, we have discussed rhetorical modes and appeals that authors use to make their claims convincing, in this assignment, you get to analyze one from a selection of essays that intrigues you and decide if the essay is rhetorically persuasive. You will create a thesis statement about the effectiveness of and strategies within the essay of your choice, and then craft an essay that systematically presents evidence - gleaned from the essay you're analyzing - of why the essay is or is not rhetorically effective. In your essay, you need to show the reader that you understand the thesis and key arguments within the essay you're analyzing; however, the focus is presenting this analysis with a heavy emphasis on rhetorical modes and appeals as learned in class.
