The General Social Surveys (GSS) have been conducted by the National Opinion Research Center annually since 1972 and biennially beginning in 1994. Data are collected from a random sample of adults in the U.S. via face to face interviews with a response rate of 70%. Main areas covered in the GSS include socioeconomic status, social mobility, social control, the family, race relations, sex relations, civil liberties, and morality. The GSS is considered to be representative of the US adult population and is the most widely cited and respected study of social attitudes in the US.

The GSS has questions that are standard and have been included in each wave of data collection, but there are also topical modules to further explore current issues, such as feminism, abortion, and racial discrimination.
