The increase in conflicts and tensions around the world, between nations and between political movements, has created a sense among many Canadians that we need to do what we can to promote peaceful interactions. A group of prominent Canadian sports figures, including Olympic athletes and professional hockey, basketball, baseball, lacrosse and soccer players have set out to create a new sports initiative designed to bring together diverse groups among the Canadian population for tension-free interactions. The goal is to not only give Canadians a 'good news story to focus on, but also to create a model of peaceful interaction between groups that might otherwise be at odds. They call this venture the "Peace Sports League". It involves: creating an umbrella structure that can help local organizations organize and host short-term, high-profile events, through the summer, as fund-raisers for humanitarian organizations identifying local community organizations that represent different groups who may be at odds in their 'home countries' building on existing structures of amateur sports groups across the country providing organizational support, branding and signage, publicity and financial co-ordination identifying appropriate not-for-profit charities that would be suitable recipients ensure accountability for the funds raised The organizing committee knows that the task will not be easy and want to ensure the initiative is as effective as possible. On one level, they want to ensure they are sensitive to the tensions that exist and use appropriate language when inviting participation. They also want to ensure the know which sports they should focus on, what groups within the population (age, gender, ethnicity) they should target, what messaging is most likely to trigger participation
