The instruction mnemonic is the name assigned to the instruction. The opcode for an instruction is the 6-bit pattern that tells the control unit what type of operation should be performed and what the format of the 32-bit machine instruction is. For example, the load word instruction has the mnemonic lw and the opcode 0x23. R-type instructions use a function code to identify the ALU operation to perform. Use hex to list each of the function codes defined for our MIPS core instruction subset and list the mnemonic for the instruction that uses or corresponds to each function code.
