The main points of this lab are (1) to calculate standardized mortality rates in AZ and NY using both direct and indirect standardizations, (2) to create a map of total mortality in the continental U.S., and (3) to interpret the spatial distribution of mortality in the U.S. You will submit an Excel spreadsheet with the NY and AZ mortality rates, along with a write-up that includes four sections; an introduction, methods, results, and discussion questions, as detailed below. Your map, as a JPEG image, should also be embedded in the write-up. Introduction: Simply write a few sentences giving an overview of what you did. Methods: Briefly describe how you did what was described in the introduction section. Do not detail every step that you took - just describe the general tasks. If possible, you should include the formulas for direct and indirect standardization here (for example, use the WORD equation editor or simply paste an image from, say, a screen shot)
